Oven Cracks

Here's a problem that developed with surface bonding cement used to stucco an oven. Basically, the stucco held up fairly well except by the front of the oven. It is here where the intense oven heat washed over the stucco, and cement won't hold up to high oven temperatures. However, had refractory cement been used in the front, then there might not have been any damage. Some sort of heat shield could also work and a chimney might also have solved the problem, but then the construction becomes more complicated.

Hello again,

How have your ovens with surface bonding cement held up? Tomorrow I will be insulating my oven and then I need to finish it with something. I am in Ontario and we get a fair amount of rain as well as snow in winter so it has to be well protected. I do plan to build a roof as well.

Thanks
Paul

Surface bonding cement works reasonably well. Two ovens that I worked on a year ago experienced no problems with leakage. You could expect small, thin cracks in the surface to develop, but these can be easily patched with a little more cement or high temperature silicone. I have not tried the silicone, but my informant says it works. However, I don't see why high temp is necessary since the sbc should not get that hot, except around the top of the opening.
If you're going to build a roof over the oven, then it shouldn't matter what the composition of the stucco is.
My mud oven is simply draped with metal roofing, and that's working fine. It keeps out the rain and snow.
